Sheriff Releases Update on Monday Shooting

One person faces charges as the victim of a shooting Monday in Stephens County continues to recover.

Tuesday afternoon, Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley released additional information on Monday’s shooting on Riverdale Road.

Shirley said the victim, whom he identified as 49-year-old Rex Douglas Holbrook of Riverdale Road, remained in Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Meanwhile, the sheriff said his office has arrested and charged 45-year-old William David Whiten, also of Riverdale Road, in connection to the incident.

According to the sheriff, Whiten is charged with Aggravated Assault, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, and Possession of Methamphetamine.

“This occurred as a result of a confrontation,” said Shirley. “That is all I can release at this time.”

Shirley said the incident took place at Whiten’s residence.

According to the sheriff, his deputies responded to that location on Monday evening.

He said when deputies arrived, they found Holbrook shot in the lower abdomen.

Shirley said Holbrook was lifeflighted to Greenville for treatment.

The sheriff said that investigators recovered a firearm in the woods after they arrived on scene.

He said the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
