Sewer Expansion Project Starting in August

A Stephens County sewer expansion project is set to start soon.

A pre-construction meeting for the first phase of a sewer expansion project on the Toccoa By-pass took place last Thursday.

Stephens County Development Authority Executive Director Tim Martin said that work is scheduled to start on August 1.

“What we will first see is the clearing along the right of way of this expansion, staking and then some boring at the various intersections,” said Martin. “They will make haste to complete that project within 365 days.”

Heading up construction on the project is a firm called the Legacy Group, which Martin says came in with a bid just under the budgeted amount of $3.5 million.

Local governments and the Development Authority have received SPLOST and grant money for the project.

This phase of expansion to the city of Toccoa’s sewer system will cover an area along the Toccoa By-pass between Big A Road and Georgia Highway 106.

The project also includes water system improvements necessary to match the sewer system expansion and improvements.

According to Martin, this enhances the ability to serve a number of industrial properties.

He said that it is great to see the project get started after years of effort.

“Billy Morse and the team at the city, Phyllis Ayers and her support at the county have been instrumental in getting this project together,” said Martin. “We have been working diligently since 2006 and it is great to see we are at this point in the project.”

It is part of a larger sewer expansion project that would also build out sewer on Big A Road between Rose Lane and the Toccoa By-pass.

Martin said plans remain down the road to work on that effort.
