SCSO Using New K-9, “Kilo,” In Drug Enforcement

The Stephens County Sheriff’s Office is introducing a new deputy into its ranks of the four-legged variety.

Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley said that the Sheriff’s Office has added a new K-9 deputy, “Kilo,” to the ranks at the Sheriff’s Office.

Shirley said the K-9 program was newly implemented last year.

“We are getting him certified with our K-9 handler and were able to equip a truck,” said Shirley.

Shirley went on to say that having “Kilo” provides numerous advantages.

“It enables us to be there when a deputy has a car pulled on that has a suspicion of drugs and it also helps us when we do drug sweeps in the schools,” said Shirley.

The sheriff said that typically, it can cost a significant amount of money to implement a K-9 program.

However, Shirley said in this case, Stephens County was able to benefit from the help of a nearby law enforcement agency.

“We received ‘Kilo’ from the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office, who retired him,” said Shirley. “He still had some good years left. He is also a tracking dog and they needed a new tracking dog. He is eight years old and that is a little bit old to do the tracking, so we were fortunate and received him free.”

Kilo’s handler is Deputy Randy Mobley.
