SCSO Destroys Unwanted Prescriptions

A recent event helps destroy a large amount of unwanted, unneeded prescription medications.

The Stephens County Sheriff’s Office recently destroyed about 68 pounds of prescription medication that was obtained through the Prescription Pill and Drug Disposal Program.

According to Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley, the Sheriff’s Office started participating in this program about five years ago and to this date, has destroyed well over 200 pounds of prescription medication through this program.

Shirley says that without this program, the medication would have likely ended up either flushed into the water system or have been distributed on the street.

The sheriff goes on to say that he believes that providing citizens with a safe place to drop off unused, unwanted, or out-of-date prescriptions is one of the best ways to help ensure the proper disposal of such unneeded or unwanted medication.

The Sheriff’s Office has two drop points for such medications.

They are at the Stephens County Jail and at the Stephens County Government Building.

Unneeded, unwanted, and out-of-date prescription medications can also be dropped off at the Toccoa Police Department.
