SCMS Marks Black History Month

Stephens County Middle School marks Black History Month.

The school held its annual Black History Month program on Thursday afternoon.

This year’s special guest speaker was Stephens County High School graduate Marina Woodruff.

She used music to show how artists and singers of all races and styles today are influenced by famous black artists of the past, using as examples singers like Otis Redding, James Brown, and Louis Armstrong.

Woodruff said she felt it was a lesson the students could relate to.

“One, the Grammys were recent,” said Woodruff. “Plus, music is an integral part of everyone’s life and culture. A lot of times we do not know the influences of what we have today.”

She said she wanted to also leave them with an important message.

“Your life matters and we are depending on you to make it happen,” she told the students.

The musical theme of the program continued with a special performance by Milkshake Mayfield.
