SCHS Wrestling Goes 1-2 At Area Duals

The Stephens County High School wrestling team comes up just short in its bid to qualify for the state tournament.

This past weekend, the Indians took part in the Area Duals at Buford High School.

Stephens County went 1-2 during the tournament, just missing out on states.

In the first round, the Indians lost to White County 43-34 in a match that came down to the final bout with White getting a pin to secure the victory.

Getting victories for the Indians against White County were Javon Jones, Jake Murray, Jay Stowe, Blake Peeples, Devin Burns, and Gary Walker.

The Indians then stayed alive in the tournament by defeating Monroe Area by a 63-15 score in the consolation semi-finals.

Winning against Monroe Area were Wolfgang Watkins, Corey Kindel, Javon Jones, Jake Murray, Devin DeShazer, Dalton Roberts, Blake Peeples, Devin Burns, Logan Loudermilk, Gavin Walker, and Gary Walker.

Stephens County then took on Chestatee for a chance to qualify for states, but lost 40-36, in a match where the Indians were without Jay Stowe, who was injured in the White match with a dislocated shoulder.

Victories against Chestatee for the Indians came from Corey Kindel, Dalton Roberts, Blake Peeples, Devin Burns, Logan Loudermilk, and Gary Walker.

Moving on to the state duals from Region 8-AAAA were Buford and North Hall, with North Hall winning the region title.

The Indians are next gearing up for the traditional tournament on January 30 and 31, geared more towards individuals.

But first, the Indians will have a JV match at home this Thursday against Rabun County and Franklin County at 5:30 p.m.

The Indians’ match today at West Oak has been cancelled, according to Indian Wrestling Coach Rob Stowe.
