May 6, 2013

Three Stephens County Indian boys tennis team players earn all-region honors.

Region coaches selected the three to the Region 8-AAAA All-Region team tennis team last week.

Senior Brett Williams and sophomore Austin Simmons were both chosen second-team all-region. Williams played #3 singles for the Indians and compiled an overall match record of 14-2. Simmons played #1 singles and had an overall match record of 12-3.

Meanwhile, junior Steven Whitworth was chosen as honorable mention all-region. Whitworth played #2 singles for the Indians and compiled an overall match record of 12-3.

Indian Tennis Head Coach Donny Williams says he is extremely proud of all three players, adding that they carried the boys’ team into the state playoffs with their outstanding play in singles.

The Stephens County boys’ tennis team made the first round of the state playoffs this year after finishing the season third in Region 8-AAAA. The Indians’ record this year was 12-4.

According to Williams, each of them had several come-from-behind wins and match-clinching victories this season. He says a trio of talent like this comes along just ever so often.
