SCHS Sweeps Oconee In Varsity Basketball Doubleheader

The Stephens County basketball teams each pick up their first win of the region schedule.

Saturday, the Indians and Lady Indians hosted the Oconee County Warriors and Lady Warriors at the Currahee Arena in Toccoa.

In the girls’ game, the Lady Indians got their first win in region play, beating Oconee County, 37-27.

The Lady Indians went 21 of 34 at the free throw line to propel themselves to the win.

Tykia Thompson scored 17 points for the Lady Indians to lead all scorers and Kaitlyn Phillips added seven points.

Moving to the boys’ game, Stephens County steadily pulled away in the second and third quarters to beat Oconee County, 62-32, to also pick up its first region win of the season.

De’Undre Singleton had 19 points to lead the Indians, while Ty Nails and Nunu Walker each scored eight points.

Saturday’s sweep came after a tough Friday road trip to North Oconee.

In Bogart on Friday, the Lady Indians and Indians both lost region games.

In the girls’ game on Friday, Stephens County lost to the top-ranked team in AAAA, the North Oconee Lady Titans, 59-25.

Thompson and Phillips each had eight points on Friday.

On Friday, the boys lost 68-59 to the Titans.

Singleton scored 17 to lead the Indians Friday and Walker added 15 points.

For the season, the Lady Indians are 2-16 overall and the Indian boys are 12-5. Both teams are 1-3 in Region 8-AAAA.

They are back in action on Tuesday at Jefferson in another region contest.
