Stephens County picks up a basketball sweep on the road in Dahlonega.
In a battle of the Indians on Saturday, Stephens County’s Indian and Lady Indian basketball teams both defeated Lumpkin County’s Indians and Lady Indians.
First in the girls’ game, Stephens County withstood an early third-quarter run and pulled away in the second half to beat Lumpkin County 54-35.
Charity Major led Stephens County with 17 points, while Mya Cleveland added 11. Morgan Wood was the lone Lumpkin County player in double figures with 13 points.
Stephens County’s Lady Indians are now 3-12 on the season.
Meanwhile, the Stephens County boys built a quick advantage after one quarter and did not trail in the final three quarters to defeat Lumpkin County 57-46.
Stephens County’s Indians had three players in double figures. Cody Helgeland led the way with 15 points, while Tavoris Davis added 13 points and Fred Smith scored 11 points.
Daniel McCrary and Johnathan Gilreath each had nine points for Lumpkin County.
The Stephens County boys are now 11-4 on the season.
While Lumpkin County is a region opponent, this game did not count in the region standings.
That all changes on Tuesday night though as Stephens County travels to take on Lanier in the official region opener.
