SCHS Interact Club Looking To Again “Stuff the Bus”

Stephens County High School students are looking to stuff the bus again later this month.

The third annual Interact Club “Stuff the Bus” canned food drive will take place from November 17 to November 21.

Interact Club Advisor Derek Demmler said the drive will be held at Stephens County High School, Stephens County Middle School, and Big A Elementary School.

“All of the food we raise for our canned food drive stays in our community,” said Demmler. “It is a big help, especially when shelves get a little low on our local food pantries right before Thanksgiving.”

In past years, the drive has raised 3,000 to 4,000 pounds of food, Demmler said, and they are trying to top that this year.

In conjunction with the canned food drive, the Interact Club and Toccoa Rotary Club are hosting the 2nd annual Stuff the Bus Run/Walk at Stephens County High School on Saturday, November 22.

Demmler said this year, there will be a 5K and 10K run/walk, as well as a Fun Run.

Registration is $30 for one race, $45 to do both the 5K and 10K, or $15 for the Fun Run.

He said proceeds from the run will benefit a number of different charities.

“Proceeds go to Rotary and Interact projects, mainly food-related and polio-related, right now,” said Demmler, citing Polio Plus and the Food 2 Kids program as some of the efforts that will receive money from this.

“We try to keep it local, as well as international,” said Demmler.

Community members can also bring canned food donations to the run/walk on November 22 to donate.

Finally, Rotary and Interact are also working together on a shoe drive.

Demmler said that they are looking for people to donate their gently used shoes that they no longer needed.

“Those are going to be going to developing countries,” said Demmler. “We will send to a company that will refurbish them a little bit and send them where they are needed most.”

Shoes donated should be in complete pairs.

Shoes can be dropped off here at the WNEG business office, Campfire’s Camp Toccoa, or at Stephens County High School.
