SCHS Fall Football Practice Underway

High School football season is getting underway across the state of Georgia with the beginning of Fall practice.

That includes Stephens County High School, where practice began in pads on Saturday following five days of practice in shorts last week.

Indians’ Head Coach Frank Barden said the next two weeks of practice are important leading up to the team’s first scrimmage against Habersham Central at home on August 14, especially since there was no full Spring practice.

“The next two weeks are real important for us being the first time in pads with this team,” said Barden.

The Indians are coming up a season last year in which they made the second round of the state AAAA playoffs.

However, last year’s team graduated a lot of seniors in key areas.

Barden said camp provides coaches an opportunity to see which players are stepping up in those spots to fill the shoes of last year’s seniors.

“There is no question that the offensive line is a strength,” said Barden. “We are young in the skill positions.”

He said the next two weeks are important for finding players at positions like quarterback and wide receiver.

Barden went on to say that the start of practice is just a fun time of the year to get everything started back up and building this year’s team.

“It is just going to be us going to work,” said Barden. “It is going to be us going to work. It is a new team with a new character.”

Stephens County scrimmages Habersham at home on August 14, then Hart at home on August 21, before opening the regular season at home against Franklin County on August 28.
