SCHS Basketball Season Starting Up This Weekend

Basketball season is starting up at Stephens County High School.

Both the Indian and Lady Indian teams open up play this weekend and head coaches Anthony Daniel and Chad Bridges appeared on “Crunchtime” a couple of weeks ago to talk about their teams and the upcoming season.

On the girls’ side, the Stephens County Lady Indians are coming off of a season in which they finished 16-13 and made it to the state playoffs, falling in a close game to Columbia in the first round last year.

Lady Indian Basketball Head Coach Anthony Daniel said the team is pretty young coming into the season.

Daniel said that the youth may cause them to press on defense a little less this season than in past years.

“We will probably play a little more zone,” said Daniel. “It is not going to be the up-tempo game we are wanting, but you have to play to what you have.”

Looking at Region 8-AAAA on the girls’ side, Daniel said Buford will be very strong as always and calls it the possibly the toughest region from top to bottom in his time as the head coach of the Lady Indians.

As for the Indian boys’ basketball team, it is coming off of a 5-21 season.

Boys’ Coach Chad Bridges said that his team is returning about three players with significant varsity experience.

He said, however, the boys will look to play quicker this season.

“I think we are more athletic than we were last year and I think we have pretty good basketball IQ,” said Bridges. “The more times you get out and lay it up, the better off you are.”

Looking at Region 8-AAAA, Bridges said Buford and Johnson will likely be the top teams in the region heading into the season. He says after that, he hopes the rest of the region is fairly even.

Stephens County’s boys’ and girls’ basketball teams will open play on Saturday.

The Lady Indians and Indians will host Franklin County in what is a change from the original schedule.

The teams will not play on Friday in Carnesville as first scheduled because of Friday’s state playoff football game.

Saturday’s games at Stephens County start at 4 p.m. with the varsity girls’ game and the boys’ game to follow.

AM 630 WNEG will of course broadcast Indian and Lady Indian basketball again this season.
