School System Still Waiting on FY 2014 Audit; No Action Taken at Weekend Meeting

The Stephens County School System continues to wait on its Fiscal Year 2014 audit.

Stephens County School Superintendent Bryan Dorsey said that state auditors still have not begun the process of conducting the audit for the fiscal year that ended back in July.

“At this point, I do not think the Department of Audits has responded to our request to conduct our financial statements preparation,” said Dorsey. “I think we are still in a holding pattern with them.”

Finalizing the financial statements is the first step in the audit process.

Dorsey said the school system is having state auditors prepare the Fiscal Year 2014 financial statements as they did in Fiscal Year 2013 because as in Fiscal Year 2013, Dorsey says that numerous errors were found in the Fiscal Year 2014 financial statements.

Once the state finalizes the financial statements, a different team would come in to conduct the state audit.

This is the same process that the school system followed for the Fiscal Year 2013 audit last year.

Dorsey said there is no timeline from the state for completing the audit.

“I would have already thought that would have begun, but I am sure they also have a schedule they have been working with and they obviously have not been able to free the people to come do that at this time,” said Dorsey.

Meanwhile, the Stephens County Board of Education met on Saturday morning.

The board went into executive session to discuss personnel.

Following an executive session of more than two hours, the school board returned to open session and adjourned the meeting. No action was taken.
