Saturday is National Hunting and Fishing Day

Georgia will again mark National Hunting and Fishing Day this coming weekend.

It is set for Saturday, September 24 and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources Division says that on this day, there will be a number of different free events around the state.

Events offered in Georgia will include kids’ fishing events and Outdoor Adventure Days with a host of different activities.

In addition to these events, a free fishing day is offered to all Georgia residents on Saturday, September 24.

On this day, the state DNR said that residents do not need a fishing license or a trout license to fish on any public waters in the state including lakes, streams, ponds and public fishing areas. Also, the DNR said residents do not need to obtain a wildlife management area license to fish on a WMA or public fishing area on this day.
The U.S. Congress and President Richard Nixon established National Hunting and Fishing Day in 1973 to recognize generations of hunters and anglers for the time and money they donate to wildlife conservation programs.

It is marked each year on the fourth Saturday of September.

Georgia DNR Wildlife Resources Division Director Rusty Garrison said he encourages people to bring friends and family to a National Hunting and Fishing Day event, adding that events are family-friendly and a great way to introduce youth and newcomers to outdoor sports while teaching them about the important role that hunting and fishing have for Georgia’s wildlife conservation programs.
