Safety Check Leads to Two Incidents, Four Arrests

A safety checkpoint Friday leads to four arrests in Stephens County.

According to Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley, the checkpoint took place in the Bruce Creek area.

He said that in the first incident, safety check officers were alerted to a vehicle due to the actions of the driver.

Shirley went on to say that during the investigation, the Stephens County K-9, “Gunner,” was deployed indicating a positive alert on the vehicle.

“After a search was conducted on the vehicle, the driver identified as Jamie Daniel park, age 22 of Lavonia, was subsequently arrested for Possession of Methamphetamine, Driving Under the Influence of drugs, and Possession of a Schedule Two Narcotic,” said Shirley. “The passenger of the vehicle, identified as Jennifer Freeman, was also arrested and charged with Possession of Methamphetamine and Possession of Marijuana.”

The sheriff said both subjects are being held at the Stephens County Jail at last report awaiting a first appearance hearing.

Meanwhile, Shirley said the second incident from Friday’s safety check started when deputies asked a driver for his license.

“When the driver approached the check point, he was unable to produce his driver’s license,” said Shirley. “At this time, when officers asked the driver to pull to the side of the roadway, he attempted to flee. The driver stalled the vehicle and was immediately removed from the vehicle. Deputies searched the vehicle and located an amount of methamphetamine.”

Shirley said the driver of the vehicle was identified as 30-year-old Samuel George of Greenville, South Carolina.

George has been charged with Possession of Methamphetamine and Fleeing and Attempting to Elude.

According to the sheriff, George also has a warrant out of South Carolina for a parole violation.

Also arrested was 32-year-old Joslyn Hathaway of Toccoa.

Shirley said she was arrested on a charge of Possession of Methamphetamine and also has a warrant out of Stephens County for a probation violation.

At last report, both George and Hathaway were being held at the Stephens County Jail awaiting a first appearance hearing.
