Rivers Alive Cleanup on Saturday

Volunteers will gather Saturday for an annual Fall clean-up event in Stephens County.

Saturday is the annual “Rivers Alive” clean-up in Stephens County, organized each year by Keep Toccoa-Stephens County Beautiful.

KTSCB Executive Director Linda Scofield said everyone is invited to help.

She said anyone wanting to volunteer should meet at 9 a.m. Saturday at Yonah Dam Park.

“Saturday, we are all meeting up at Yonah Dam Park and this year, we are going to really concentrate on Panther Creek beyond the bridge,” said Scofield, who said they have noticed a lot of trash in that area.

“Rivers Alive” is a state effort, led by the Georgia Environmental Protection Division Outreach Program.

Scofield says its mission is to create awareness of and involvement in the preservation of Georgia’s water resources, which total around 70,150 miles of streams and rivers.

“The waterways provide us with freshwater, recreational opportunities, like fishing and canoeing,” said Scofield. “It is really important that we take the opportunity to clean and protect these environments.”

This year’s “Rivers Alive” cleanup in Stephens County will last until about noon on Saturday, when lunch will be served at Yonah Dam Park.
