Relay for Life Tonight in Stephens County

Stephens County will come together tonight in the ongoing fight against cancer.

The Relay for Life of Stephens County is taking place tonight from 6 p.m. to midnight at a new location, the Stephens County Recreation Department football field off of Rose Lane.

Local American Cancer Society Community Manager Cameron Lopez said that they are looking forward to a fun night at a new location.

“We are going to have games and all kinds of fun activities for everyone and entertainment and all of that is to raise money for the American Cancer Society,” said Lopez.

Everyone is invited to attend Relay for Life. Lopez said she wants to especially encourage cancer survivors and their families and caregivers to come out.

Admission is free at Relay, though numerous teams will be holding fundraisers during Relay by selling food and other items,

According to Lopez, Relay is the signature fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.

She said the money raised during Relay supports a number of different programs that the American Cancer Society is involved in.

“The money raised helps further the Cancer Society’s mission to help people stay well and get well and of course, we are funding research as well,” said Lopez. “It supports the programs and services offered by the American Cancer Society. Programs like our patient lodging program, ‘Look Good Feel Better.’ There are just lots of different things that the American Cancer Society does with the money we raise.”

Lopez said that so far, fundraising in Stephens County is going well.

“We have a lot of teams on board, a lot of people raising money out there and a lot of businesses supporting us this year, so we are very, very proud to see how the community is coming together,” said Lopez. “Our goal is $41,000 and we are just above $21,000 right now.”

Lopez also said that fundraising for Relay for Life is a year-round effort.
