An annual benefit tennis tournament returns to Stephens County next month.
The annual Nancy Jo Tennis Tournament will take place from May 3 through May 5 at the Stephens County High School tennis complex in Toccoa.
Charles Bacon is on the publicity committee for the tournament.
He said this is the 12th annual Nancy Jo Tennis Tournament.
“The goal is to provide contributions to the American Cancer Society in honor of Nancy Jo Huelsman, who was a local business owner and an avid tennis player who lost her battle with Mantle Cell Lymphoma in 2001,” said Bacon. “The tennis tournament started in 2002 and has increased in size and popularity every year since.”
In addition this year, the tournament is also remembering Nancy Jo’s husband, Bob, who was co-chair of the tournament for many years and succumbed to lung cancer last July.
Bacon said that the goal is to continue successfully raising funds for the American Cancer Society.
“For the last 11 years, we have donated over $48,000 to the American Cancer Society and hopefully we will have a good turnout and we will able to donate substantially more,” said Bacon.
The tournament has also received Gold All-Star Awards from the American Cancer Society for fundraising in 2008, 2010, 2011, and 2012.
Beyond raising money for a good cause, Bacon said the tournament is a fun event in which everyone is invited to participate.
“We encourage players of all ages and skill levels to play,” said Bacon.
According to Bacon, there are open divisions for the most talented players, as well as A, B, and C brackets. In addition, there are men’s and women’s 50-and-over categories and boys’ and girls’ 14-and-under divisions in singles and doubles.
“We normally have had 80 to 90 participants in the past and I am hoping we will have even more than that this year,” he added.
Registration is underway now and forms can be found online at www.nancyjotennis.com, or at locations including the Toccoa-Stephens County Chamber of Commerce, Stephens County Recreation Department, Brother John Subs, and Northview Properties.
The registration deadline is April 27 and it is April 20 in order to obtain a souvenir T-shirt.
