Registration Underway for Leap for Literacy

An annual winter time fund raising tradition returns to Stephens County later this month.

The 9th annual Leap for Literacy will take place on Saturday, February 28 at the Georgia Baptist Conference Center in Toccoa.

During the “Leap for Literacy,” participants brave the cold waters of Lake Louise and jump in to raise funds for the Stephens County Read-At-Home Program.

The Read-at-Home program is organized by Family Connection of Stephens County and sends free books monthly to children ages 0 to 5 in Stephens County.

Family Connection of Stephens County Executive Director Allyson Warren said the program’s goal is to promote literacy and school readiness.

“The hope with that is that the parent will read to the child daily,” said Warren. “Research has shown it does help with language development and prepare a child for school.”

Warren said that there are two ways that people can raise money for and participate in the Leap for Literacy.

Someone can either do the full Leap by raising $100 as an individual or $250 as a team, said Warren.

The other option, she said, is a “River Shiver” walking through knee-high water for a $50 donation.

Warren said the deadline to register to leap for the February 28 Leap for Literacy is February 13.
