Red Cross Still Facing Blood Shortage

Winter continues to bring blood shortages for the American Red Cross.

The agency said that following several rounds of severe winter weather in many parts of the country, it needs eligible blood and platelet donors to donate in order to help restock its shelves to overcome a shortage.

According to the Red Cross, about 300 blood drives across 27 states have been forced to cancel due to inclement winter weather since December 1, resulting in more than 10,500 blood and platelet donations going uncollected.

The Red Cross went on to point out that despite the weather, hospital patients still rely on transfusions.

To schedule an appointment to donate blood or platelets to the American Red Cross, use the free Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org, or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Individuals who are at least 17 years of age, weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health are eligible to donate blood. Also, those 16 years of age can donate with parental consent in most states.
