Red Cross Issues Call for Blood Donations

The American Red Cross said it is facing a critical blood shortage, with less than a five-day supply on hand at the current time.

Red Cross officials said the agency strives to have a five-day blood supply at all times to meet the needs of patients every day and be prepared for emergencies that may require significant volumes of donated blood products.

According to the Red Cross, blood and platelets are being distributed to hospitals faster than donations are coming in at times, which impacts the ability to rebuild the blood supply.

The Red Cross said while thousands of people from across the country responded to the emergency request for blood and platelet donations issued by the agency in early July, eligible donors are urged to give now to help ensure the agency has blood available throughout the rest of the summer to meet patient needs.

Red Cross officials said all blood types are urgently needed.

To schedule an appointment to donate blood or platelets to the American Red Cross, use the free Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org, or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Individuals who are at least 17 years of age, weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health are eligible to donate blood. Also, those 16 years of age can donate with parental consent in most states.
