Preliminary Findings Indicate Clarkesville Mayor Died of Self-inflicted Gunshot Wound

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Thursday that a preliminary finding showed that Clarkesville Mayor Dr. Terry Greene died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

A GBI press release confirmed that Thursday morning.

According to that press release, the GBI Medical Examiner issued the preliminary finding and said further forensic testing will be done before an official autopsy report is issued.

The autopsy took place Tuesday at the Medical Examiner’s Office in Decatur.

The 53-year-old Greene died Sunday evening after a shooting incident at his home in Clarkesville.

Authorities said the shooting incident resulted from a reported domestic disturbance at Mayor Greene’s home between and his wife.

After the shooting, Greene was taken to Atlanta Medical Center, where he later died.

GBI officials did say that the investigation is active and ongoing.

In the meantime, funeral services for Greene will be at 3 p.m. today (Friday) at River Point Community Church in Demorest with interment to follow in the Clarkesville Memorial Cemetery.

Greene was elected to Clarkesville City Council in 1999 after serving on the city’s planning and zoning commission.

Then in 2005, he was elected mayor, a position he held until his death.

Also, Greene was the owner of and a practicing doctor at Habersham Primary Care. He was appointed as Chief of Staff at Habersham Medical Center from 2010 to 2012.

Greene is survived by his wife and four children.
