Pre-K Week Marked in Stephens Co.

20141008_094553Georgia marks its annual Pre-K week.

50th District State Senator John Wilkinson read to Pre-K students at Eastanollee Elementary School Wednesday as part of Pre-K week activities in Georgia.

Wilkinson said it Pre-K is an important part of the educational system in Georgia.

“Obviously, it is a very important time in a child’s life,” said Wilkinson. “It really gives them a head start on the reading skills and their social interactions. All the research shows that they really benefit from participation in a program like this.”

While meeting with the students, Wilkinson also stressed to them how important it was to learn to read.

He said he enjoys having a chance to meet with the students and pass along that important message by reading with them.

“We feel like every student needs to learn to read by the time they complete the third grade and the earlier we can get them started on that goal, the better,” said Wilkinson. “Reading skills are so important. Reading is one thing that really opens doors to a lot of avenues in a young person’s and older people’s lives.”

This is the fourth annual Georgia Pre-K Week.

Pre-K Week in the state is organized and sponsored by Voices for Georgia’s Children, a nonprofit child policy and advocacy organization.
