People First, Peer Center Hold Christmas Party

Two local organizations come together for a special holiday party.

People First of Stephens County hosted its annual Christmas Party on Friday at the Stephens County Peer Center in Toccoa.

Again this year, the Peer Center joined with People First at the party.

According to Stephens County People First Supporter Jeraldine Hayes, People First puts the party together every year for the Peer Center and all celebrate together.

Hayes said everyone seemed to be having a great time.

“We are so happy to see all of these folks enjoying the food, the singing, it has just been incredible so far,” said Hayes. “We not only prepare a meal, but we give gift cards to everyone who comes into the center every day.”

Lisa Shurtleff is the Director of the Stephens County Peer Center, which is a place where individuals go daily to receive support on mental health recovery and other issues.

She said the Peer Center appreciates People First’s efforts in putting everything together for this party.

“We really appreciate them,” said Shurtleff. “They not only provide food, but give gift cards as well. It is kind of neat that they come and do that.”

People First of Stephens County is an organization that involves people with disabilities.

Hayes said they could not put the party together without a lot of support from the community.

“Today, we are so fortunate to have the Allen’s United Methodist Church women’s group from Red Hill, Georgia and we also have the Missionary Work Shop under the leadership of Thelma Terrell.”

Hayes also thanked Marilyn Woodruff, Judy Poole, Helen Gilbert, Betty Gober, and Felecia Doyle for their assistance.
