A Stephens County intersection along the Highway 17 construction zone will close starting today as part of that Highway 17 widening project.
Georgia Department of Transportation Spokesperson Teri Pope said the Oggs Branch end of Moore Circle will close at its intersection with Highway 17 today.
“State Route 17, the new road, is going to be raised by about four feet from where the existing road is now,” said Pope. “Every intersection along State Route 17 is going to have to be changed.”
Pope went on to say that the DOT hopes that closing the intersection will not have a huge impact on traffic using Moore Circle.
“The great thing about Moore Circle is that the other end of the road opens on to 17, so it will be really easy for everybody to just use one end,” said Pope.
There is no word on how long the intersection will remain closed.
All of this work is part of turning Highway 17 into a four lane road between Toccoa and the Stephens/Franklin County line.
The whole project is scheduled to be done in the Spring of 2016.
