Officer Schulman Returns Home

Wounded Lavonia Police Captain Michael Schulman is home for Christmas.

A line of Lavonia Police officers, Sheriff’s deputies and law enforcement from several Northeast Georgia agencies saluted Schulman Tuesday as he was released from the hospital in Greenville.

Late Tuesday morning, a procession of dozens of law enforcement vehicles escorted the ambulance that brought Schulman home to his family down Interstate 85 and into Lavonia.

Once in Lavonia, the ambulance and police escort made their way through town, passing the Lavonia Police Department and then on to the Schulman home as onlookers cheered.

Lavonia Police Chief Bruce Carlisle organized Tuesday’s escort.

On his Facebook page, a smiling Schulman holds his two children and thanks the community for their prayers and support.

Schulman was shot December 12th in the parking lot of Zaxby’s in Lavonia while trying to arrest 22-year old Khari Anthony Dashaun Gordon of Greenville, South Carolina.

Gordon allegedly shot Schulman and his partner, Officer Jeffrey Martin, after the officers discovered the vehicle he was driving was stolen out of South Carolina.

Schulman suffered a gunshot wound under his left arm and was taken to Greenville Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Martin, who lives in Toccoa, was shot in the hand and is undergoing physical therapy.

Sunday night, a community prayer vigil was held at the Lavonia Elementary School in support of Schulman, Martin and all area law enforcement.

Meanwhile, Gordon remains in the Franklin County Detention Center without bond.

He is charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, two counts of criminal attempts to commit murder, and one count of possession of a weapon during the commission of a felony.

At the time of the shooting last week, Gordon was out on bond on attempted murder charges stemming from an incident last March in the Greenville area.

The GBI continues to investigate and additional charges are pending.
