NGTC Students Participate at National SkillsUSA Event

A number of area students at North Georgia Technical College are back after competing in a national competition.

Nine North Georgia Tech students recently traveled to Louisville, Kentucky, for the 51st annual SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skill Conference. NGTC’s Brad Budd of Hephzibah garnered a Silver medal in Photography and Michelle Brewer of Clayton achieved Bronze in the Medical Assisting event.

Students from the area traveling to the national event included Allen Mull of Clarkesville in CNC Technician, Briana Bramlett of Toccoa in Commercial Baking, and Makayla Stewart of Clarkesville in Medical Math. Georgia Zumwalt also attended as the Vice President of the Georgia SkillsUSA Chapter.

SkillsUSA is a national career and technical student organization with chapters at high schools and colleges across the country.

The contests are planned by technical committees made up of representatives of labor and management in the industries and are designed to test the skills needed for a successful entry-level performance in given occupational fields. Safety practices and procedures – an area of great concern to labor and management alike – are judged and graded and constitute a portion of a contestant’s score.

North Georgia Tech Vice President for Economic Development Dr. Mark Ivester says it was a fantastic experience to see such commitment on a national level to the technical skills we need to keep moving this country forward, adding that the students were well prepared and dedicated and it was exciting to see them put everything they had into their competition.

Meanwhile, North Georgia Technical SkillsUSA Advisor Morris Harrison says the school’s students represented the college well, competing with professionalism and passion.
