New Ga. Gas Tax Starts Today

July 1 means a host of new laws take effect.

Among the most prominent is a change in the state of Georgia’s gasoline tax.

Earlier this year, the Georgia General Assembly passed the Transportation Funding Act of 2015, which goes into effect today.

The measure will convert the current sales tax on gasoline to an excise tax, which would amount to an increase in the price for a gallon of gasoline.

AAA said that the exact increase will depend on the price of gas and diesel, but it will likely be between 6 and 7 cents.
However, that jump may be gradual.

According to AAA Georgia Director of Public Affairs Garrett Townsend, the jump in pump prices will not likely be immediate because gas stations usually phase in the price increase over a short period of time rather than all at once.

Townsend also said that regardless of the tax adjustment, motorists in Georgia are still expected to pay less at the pump now compared to last year.
