Franklin County has a new county clerk.
At a called meeting last week, the Franklin County Board of Commissioners came out of executive session and announced that they had made a selection.
Franklin County Manager Billy Morse said the selection comes from inside the county’s administration.
“It is Elaine Evans,” said Morse. “Evans is currently our Personnel Director.”
Evans is now training for her new job with outgoing Franklin County Clerk Laverne Hilley.
Hilley is retiring at the end of the month after 15 years with Franklin County.
At a recent work session, the Franklin County Commission had approved a plan to use a five-member subcommittee to review the more than 40 resumes that came in, in addition to having the commissioners also review the applications.
One of the biggest criteria for the new county clerk was an ability to work with Franklin County’s auditors and to be able to help work on the annual budget.
Though Evans has been working in personnel for Franklin County, Morse said she brings with her a background in finance.
“She has been a critical part of our team here at the county offices,” said Morse. “She has an Associate Degree in accounting. She is very familiar with the finances of the county and will be able to do a great job for us.”
The selection process took just a few weeks.
Morse said a quick decision was needed.
“We didn’t have much time to begin with,” said Morse. “Laverne is only going to be here for a couple of more weeks so we had to act fast. We had 41 applicants and the subcommittee narrowed it down. They turned their recommendations over to the board and they took it from there.”
Hilley’s last day with Franklin County is June 28.
Evans will begin full-time as Franklin County Clerk on July 1.
