National Guard Departure Ceremony Today

A departure ceremony this morning in Stephens County will help send off the last Georgia Army National Guard Unit scheduled to depart for Afghanistan.

The 876th Vertical EN Company, based out of Toccoa, is headed to Afghanistan in the coming weeks.

Today at 10 a.m., a departure ceremony will take place for the unit at the Georgia Baptist Conference Center in Toccoa.

Nearly 150 Guardsmen will head out with the unit.

While in Afghanistan, the unit will conduct repair and construction operations including plumbing, electrical work, carpentry, and concrete work for facilities in their assigned area of operations.

The unit has been in Toccoa on and off for a number of weeks preparing for its nine-month deployment.

It has also spent time in Fort Stewart getting ready to head overseas and from Toccoa, will head to Fort Bliss before making its way to Afghanistan.
