More Details Released on Currahee Lane Bridge

More information is available on what caused the closure of a local bridge.

Last week, Stephens County Administrator Phyllis Ayers announced that the bridge on Currahee Lane, between the Toccoa By-pass and the intersection of Currahee Lane and Old Carnes Creek Road, had to be closed immediately for safety reasons.

The order came from the Georgia Department of Transportation.

Ayers said that the DOT made the call while inspecting the bridge as part of normal bridge inspections being done in the county.

She said she received notice this week with details about what the DOT found when inspecting the bridge.

According to Ayers, the letter from the DOT said the bridge was “no longer safe for live, vehicular loading.”

She said it must be closed until repairs are made or the bridge is replaced.

Ayers said at this point, there has been no specific timeline given for when repairs will be made to the bridge in order to get it back open to traffic.
