Memorial Drive, Sorrells Road Project Underway, Says County

Work is underway on miles of street re-surfacing in Stephens County.

County Administrator Phyllis Ayers updated Stephens County Commissioners on the status of road work at Tuesday’s county commission meeting.

“While we were sleeping Sunday night and Monday night, Sorrells Road and Memorial Drive were paved, although they are not completely done,” said Ayers.

She said crews had a number of other projects planned following that one over the coming weeks.

Last month, the Stephens County Commission unanimously voted to award two bids for street re-surfacing to C.W. Matthews, Inc.

One bid was for nearly $1.6 million and includes just over 20 miles in roads, while the other bid was for nearly $173,000 for road work on Memorial Drive between the Toccoa By-pass and Big A Road, along with Sorrells Road.

Meanwhile, roads included in that 20-some miles to be re-surfaced include New Hope Road, Freeman Creek Road, Tower Road, Yonah Dam Road, East Silver Shoals Road, Rumsey Road, and Bruce Road.

There is no word on exactly how long the work will take.

Stephens County Commissioners approved the issuing of bonds to forward fund the road work and the bonds will be paid back with money collected for roads and bridges through SPLOST VI.
