May Unemployment Figures Released for Ga. Counties

Preliminary unemployment numbers for the month of May for Stephens County are out.

The Georgia Department of Labor released those this week.

According to those figures, Stephens County had a preliminary unemployment rate of 6.7 percent for the month of May.

That is three-tenths of a percentage point higher than the revised April unemployment rate of 6.4 percent, but a full percentage point lower than last May’s revised rate of 7.7 percent.

However, Stephens County’s total labor force of 11,064 this May is below last May’s labor force of 11,445.

Also, the employed figure for May in Stephens County of 10,323 is less than last May’s 10,568.

Stephens County did see both its total labor force and number of employed rise in May when compared to the month of April.

The county had a labor force of 10,982 in April and of those, 10,277 were employed.

Looking at other counties in the area, Franklin County’s preliminary May unemployment rate rose three-tenths of a percentage point to 6.6 percent; Habersham County saw its preliminary unemployment rate go up three-tenths of a percentage point to 5.8 percent in May; and Banks County saw a four-tenth of a percentage point jump in its preliminary May unemployment rate as it went to 5.7 percent.
