Madison Sweeps Stephens in Home Hoops

Madison County point guard Trevon Daniel scored 22 of his 24 points in the second half and the Red Raiders overcame a 10-point halftime deficit to pull off a stunning 68-62 win over the Stephens County Indians in boys’ basketball region play at the Currahee Arena Tuesday night.

The two teams had met in late December at the Commerce Christmas Tournament and Stephens County had won by 30 points.

In Tuesday’s game, the Indians led 31-21 at the half, but behind Daniel, Madison County opened up an 11-point lead with just over five minutes to go in the game.

The Indians used full court pressure to rally back to take the lead with less than two minutes to go, but Madison County made two key three-point plays in the last minute to secure the win.

Deundra Singleton led the Indians with 24 points and Nunu Walker added 14 points for the Indians.

Stephens County falls to 11-4 overall and 0-2 in the region with the loss. Meanwhile, Madison County improved to 11-5 overall and 2-0 in the region.

In the girls’ game, the Lady Indians and Madison County were tied at the half, but the Lady Red Raiders outscored Stephens County 11-4 in the third quarter and defeated the Lady Indians, 47-36.

Madison County’s Jordan Bailey led all scorers with 24 points.

Stephens County was led by Tykia Thompson, who had 14 points.

With the loss, the Lady Indians fall to 1-15 overall and 0-2 in region play, while Madison County improved to 8-8 overall and 1-1 in the region.

The Indians and the Lady Indians return to the court Friday when they travel to North Oconee for another region contest.
