Law Enforcement Agencies Honoring National Peace Officers Week

This is National Peace Officers Memorial Week.
Monday was National Peace Officers Memorial Day and in Washington DC and around the country, law enforcement agencies lowered their flags to half staff in remembrance of fallen officers.
Franklin County Sheriff Steve Thomas is remembering two deputies who died in the line of duty.
“In accordance for federal law and observance of the Peace Officers’ Memorial Day, flags will be at half staff in honor of the peace officers that have been killed in the line of duty,” said Thomas. “This is a very touching time because myself, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department and my family have had two law enforcement officers in Franklin County whose names were Sheriff Dan Ayers and Deputy Cruz Thomas.”
Deputy Cruz Thomas is the son of Sheriff Steve Thomas.
Deputy Thomas was killed the night of May 21, 2014 while in pursuit of a speeding motorist on I-85.
A series of events took place in Washington DC beginning last week for National Peace Officers Memorial Week.
Thomas and several of his deputies typically attend the conference every year.
One of the highlights of the events over the weekend, he said, included a candlelight vigil and march, which took place Saturday night.
“Of 143 killed last year, nine were from Georgia. Names of all 394 officers nation wide were formally dedicated on the 29th Annual candlelight vigil on the evening of May 13. The candlelight vigil is one of the many events taking place at the nation’s capital during the National Police Week.”
The vigil was also aired live over the internet Saturday.
Other events include a two-day conference for the families of fallen officers and their coworkers, and a Memorial Service and Wreath Laying ceremony that took place Sunday.
