Tuesday morning, a ribbon cutting was held at the new J. Peters Restaurant on Highway 17 near Interstate 85.
Members of the Lavonia Chamber of Commerce joined other local leaders to welcome the new restaurant.
Lavonia Mayor Ralph Owens said he hopes the restaurant will be the start of more economic development along that stretch of Highway 17.
“It’s something people here have wanted for a long, long time, a nice sit-down restaurant,” Owens said. “We’re going to have two motels here by the end of the year and it’s going to be a tremendous boost to the City of Lavonia.”
The new J. Peters sits on eight acres of land owned by developer Jay Pearson.
Owner and Manager Jonathon P. Angell said Pearson persuaded him to build his sixth restaurant in Lavonia.
“This is Jay’s land and he ate in my restaurant in Anderson,” he said. “And he begged and begged me to come to Lavonia and here I am. Lavonia is a great little city.”
The original J. Peters opened in 2010 in downtown Anderson, South Carolina. However, since then Angell’s business has grown throughout upstate South Carolina.
Lavonia is his first Georgia restaurant.
J. Peters is located on Owens Drive behind the Hills’ Exxon and across from the Holiday Inn Express on Highway 17 in Lavonia.
