The Lavonia Police Department is asking for the public’s help to find the man who authorities say tried to kidnap a teenage girl.
Lavonia Police Chief Bruce Carlisle says it happened at about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Carlisle said the 17-year old was jogging through the downtown area of Lavonia when the attack occurred.
“At about 5:30p Tuesday, the woman was out exercising and when she reached the corner of East Main and Grogan Sts in downtown Laovnia, a man approached her and attempted to kidnap her,” he said.
Carlisle said the unidentified teen is now safe.
He went on to say officers have been searching for the suspect non-stop since the attack occurred.
According to Carlisle, the suspect has been described as a clean shaven black male, approximately six-feet tall, with a muscular build, and short dark-gray hair.
“Nobody in towns seems to know anybody of that description. We’ve gone through every photo we have for the last 15 years. I’m pretty confident that it is someone from out of the area,” Carlisle said.
Carlisle also said people, especially women, who are out during the day or in the evenings exercising to take extra care until this suspect is caught.
“Someone is potentially out in the area who is dangerous,” he said. “If you do go out, you might want to exercise in groups until we get this person. We have been working around the clock to locate this suspect and we are confident we will find out who he is and take him into custody.”
Carlisle said investigators will be meeting today with a GBI sketch artist and will be issuing that sketch later today.
Anyone with information on this suspect and where he might be located is asked to contact the Lavonia Police Department at 706-356-4848 or call your local law enforcement agency.
