Lavonia Man Arrested on Carjacking Charges

Copeland Lee VaughnThe Oconee County South Carolina Sheriff’s Office arrested a Lavonia, GA man Wednesday on charges related to a late July carjacking.

22-year old Copeland Lee Vaughn of Poplar Springs Road was booked into the Oconee County Detention Center around 2:38pm Wednesday.

According to the incident report, the victim, a Toccoa resident, and others riding with him in his black 2014 Nissan Sentra, arrived at a location on Rich Mountain Road where a Chevrolet Tahoe was observed with two males standing behind it.

After the passengers had exited the Sentra, the driver was ordered out of the vehicle by the two males. When he refused to, one of the males opened the door and grabbed him. The other male, later identified as Vaughn, reportedly produced a firearm and held the victim down.

The victim was told to leave, whereupon he left and went to a nearby house to ask for help. The victim’s car reportedly then went by at a high rate of speed. The vehicle was later recovered beside a business inside the city limits of Westminster, SC.

As of Thursday, Vaughn remained in custody at the Detention Center on a $10,000 surety bond.

The charge of carjacking against Vaughn is a felony with a penalty of not more than 20 years in prison. The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation.
