The City of Lavonia has a new fire chief and assistant fire chief.

At its meeting Monday evening, the Lavonia City Council unanimously approved the appointments of Scott O’Barr as the new Lavonia Fire Chief and Shane Bentley as the Assistant Fire Chief.

O’Barr replaces Bob White who retired after 23 years of service.

O’Barr said that he is grateful for their support.

“I would like to thank you for entrusting us, not just me and Shane, but Matt and John and the other officers not here tonight,” O’Barr said.

O’Barr noted a number of firefighters had retired and there will be a lot of training ahead.

“With the officers we had leave this year, we had a lot of years of experience retire all at once,” he said. “It’s going to be a lot of training and a work in progress for a lot of us. However, I want to entrust the same confidence in us that you all had in them.”

O’Barr and Bentley were chosen by the other Lavonia firefighters but their selection had to be approved by the city council and mayor Ralph Owens.
