A man wanted in connection with a murder in South Carolina is in custody after he was arrested Thursday in Lavonia.

The shooting occurred in the area of Westminster, South Carolina at around 2 a.m. Thursday.

When Oconee County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrived at the scene, they found one victim, 50-year-old Steven Gregory Brock of Westminster, South Carolina dead from a gunshot wound.

A man hunt began for the suspect in the shooting.

That suspect was identified as 64-year-old R.L. Webb of Westminster.

Thursday afternoon, the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office issued a look-out for Webb in upstate South Carolina and North Georgia.

Lavonia Police Chief Bruce Carlisle says Webb’s cell phone pinged in the Lavonia area and police went to investigate in a wooded area around St. Mary’s Sacred Heart Hospital.

Then later Thursday evening, Chief Carlisle says they received information that the suspect had checked into the Super 8 Motel just off Interstate 85 in Lavonia.

Carlisle says officers confirmed the information and moved in and made the arrest without incident.

Assisting Lavonia Police and the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office were the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and the Georgia State Patrol.

Webb has been transferred back into the custody of authorities in Oconee County.
