Lake Hartwell Cleanup-Greenup Campaign Underway

The 2017 Lake Hartwell Cleanup-Greenup Campaign is underway.

Officials with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Hartwell Lake Project and the Lake Hartwell Association are hosting the cleanup April 15-22.

The cleanup is meant to act as a spring cleaning of the shoreline and islands.

Dale Bowen, a natural resources specialist at Hartwell Lake said that the goal is to have the public involved in the cleanup.

“Basically what we’re doing is we are doing the cleanup in conjunction with earth week and culminated on earth day, which is April 22,” said Bowen. “The entire thing runs from April 15 to April 22, and it is our drive to get the public involved to try to get local groups- families, civic groups, church groups, boy scout groups, etc. to try and get involved and to adopt a section of the lake to clean for that week, but also to get them to adopt an area and clean it up periodically throughout the year.”

On the last day of the campaign, there will be a picnic for volunteers.

“For all the volunteers involved, we’re throwing a picnic at Big Oaks Recreation Area at noon on Saturday, April 22,” said Bowen. “As our thank you for helping us to keep Hartwell Lake clean. We’ll have hamburgers, hotdogs, chips drink and we’ll also have door prizes.”

Bowen said that anyone who is interested can volunteer and can even choose an area that they would like to clean up.

“Basically, they can just contact me and if they’ve got an area of the lake in mind- if they live or frequent an area of the lake and they know a place that’s dirty that they want to clean up, they can just let me know where they’d like to do that,” said Bowen. “We are asking that you do let me know how many people are involved and how many bags of trash you did remove. And if you don’t have an area of the lake, you can get in touch with me and I’ve got plenty of places that I can assign to you.”
