Lady Indians Wrap Up Successful Softball Season

The season comes to a close for the Stephens County High School Lady Indian softball team.

Last week in Columbus, Stephens County dropped two games to be eliminated from the AAAA softball state tournament finals.

Thursday, Stephens County was no-hit by Central of Carroll to fall 2-0 in their opening game as the Lady Indians were no-hit by Central pitcher Emily Williams, who struck out 20 batters.

Then on Friday, a two-out solo homerun in the top of the seventh inning by Savannah Sikes gave Chapel Hill a 1-0 victory over the Lady Indians in an elimination bracket game, ending Stephens County’s season.

Lady Indian Softball Head Coach Dave Poffenberger says that Friday’s loss was tough, but does not take away from the season that the team had.

“I could not be more proud of my girls,” said Poffenberger. “They were just fantastic this year. We ended up 24-6 overall this year. I do not think that has ever been done in the history of Stephens County softball. I know they have never made it to the Elite Eight. What a season we had.”

Poffenberger went on to say that the team’s four seniors did an excellent job this season.

Those seniors are Karly Smith, Brynn Roberts, Raina Mayfield, and Peyton Terrell.

“All four will be missed,” said Poffenberger.

Central of Carroll, the team that beat Stephens County in the first game, went onto win the entire tournament and the AAAA state championship.
