Lady Indians Sweep Their Way into Second Round of Softball Playoffs

The Stephens County Lady Indian softball team has advanced to the second round of the AAAA softball tournament by virtue of two shut-out wins Wednesday at the softball complex at Stephens County High School.

The Lady Indians defeated the Lady Ramblers of Lafayette by identical 1-0 scores in both games on Wednesday.

Sophomore Emma Whitfield pitched both games, striking out 17 in the first game and 10 more in the second.

Stephens County won the first game in the seventh inning when Ashton Ayers singled to score Whitfield with the winning run.

In the second game, the Lady Indians took the lead in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by Alana Dunson.

The Lady Indians had to then use their defense to protect that 1-0 lead.

First, Karly Smith threw out a runner at the plate to save a run.

Then in the bottom of the seventh inning, Lafayette loaded the bases with nobody out.

Whitfield struck out the next two hitters.

Then, Ivey Andrews snagged a low line drive to left field by Lafayette to win the game.

Stephens County is now 22-4 on the year.

They are on the road next week to face Mary Persons in the second round of the AAAA softball tournament.
