The Stephens County Board of Education continues to accept applications from residents interested in filling Jerry Steele’s soon to be vacated seat on the school board.
Steele announced last month that he would resign from the school board effective at the end of this month as his son, Sandy Steele, will officially take over as Stephens County High School Principal on July 1.
The Stephens County Board of Education is responsible for selecting someone to serve out the remainder of Steele’s term, which runs through the end of 2014.
Stephens County School Superintendent Sherrie Whiten said that as of late last week, the school system had received one letter of interest.
People interested in serving still have until June 28 to submit a letter of interest.
To be eligible for the seat, a candidate must live in Stephens County School Board District 1, which is the district Steele represents.
School Board District 1 covers an area stretching from downtown Toccoa southwesterly into Stephens County.
Whiten said those interested in serving should send a letter stating their interest to Susan Lambert at the Stephens County School System Administrative Offices, located at 2332 Mize Road in Toccoa.
According to Whiten, those letters will then go to the Board of Education to make a selection.
That selection could come in July.
Meanwhile, the Board of Education will also have to select a new Chairman as Steele has held that role for the board.
On Tuesday, the school board voted to wait on electing a new Chair until the new board member is in place.
