IRS Tax Season Going Well, Says Agency

Tax season is well underway and the Internal Revenue Service says that electronically filed tax returns are on track in Georgia.

IRS Spokesman Mark Green said that more Georgians have filed in the early part of this tax season than in the past and more people are using electronic filing.

“Thus far, we have received well over 2 million returns,” said Green. “We anticipate receiving a total of 4.7 million returns and electronically, we are looking at about 4.1 million.”

Green said that for those who are filing electronically, double check all information, especially bank account information.

He said making a mistake with bank account information can delay the receipt of one’s tax refund.

As for those filing with a paper return, Green reminds those people to double check all of the information to make sure the forms are all correct.

He also said those filing a paper return need to make sure to sign the return.

Meanwhile, for those who have not filed yet, Green says to make sure all paperwork has been received, including all of the necessary health care forms to fill out the Affordable Care Act portion of the tax return.

“For those individuals who have yet to receive their 1095-A, if they purchased the Affordable Care Act, you definitely need to contact your employer or the marketplace to get that 1095-A,” said Green.

Green also said people need to remember to watch out for fraud and tax scams at this time of the year.

“Safeguard your Social Security number,” said Green. “If you have an Identity Protection PIN, do not give that out. That is between you and the Internal Revenue Service.”

Federal taxes this year are due on Monday, April 18 because of the Emancipation Day holiday falling on Friday, April 15 in Washington, D.C.
