If you have not done your taxes yet, today is the day.
Tonight at midnight is the deadline to file federal income tax returns or file a form requesting an extension.
Internal Revenue Service Spokesman Mark Green said it is crucial that taxpayers make sure they have filed something by the midnight deadline.
“Either your tax return or file a Form 4868 to request an automatic six-month extension,” said Green. “Not filing either one of those returns will cause more harm to you because of penalties and interest that accrue.”
Green reminded taxpayers filing for an extension that the extension is only on filing tax returns. He cautioned that it is not an extension to pay any tax that is owed and that those who will owe tax and are filing for an extension need to pay at least 90 percent of the tax they expect to owe.
For those who need to work out a payment arrangement with the IRS, Green urged those people to communicate now with the agency to work something out.
When filing today, Green encouraged taxpayers to do so electronically.
However, for those filing with a paper return, Green reminded those individuals to double-check their returns and make sure all of the information is correct and that it signed properly.
