An autopsy will be performed on the body of a man found shot Wednesday in the Jim Skelton Homes section of the Hartwell Housing Authority on U.S. Highway 29 in Hartwell.
In a press release issued Thursday, GBI Investigator in Charge Jim Fullington says 31-year-old Tony Maddox of Hartwell collapsed outside of an apartment of an apparent gunshot wound.
Maddox was taken to AnMed Medical Center in Anderson where he was pronounced dead.
First reports indicated an armed suspect was at large and Hart County Middle and High Schools were immediately put on lockdown as were all elementary schools.
The lock down was lifted once authorities determined there was note a shooter at large.
Hartwell Police Chief Cecil Reno said further investigation concluded the deceased person inside the apartment was the not the victim of a homicide.
Reno says that there were shots fired, but adds authorities believe there was not a shooter and will continue to investigate the incident.
Fullington says Maddox’s body was taken to the GBI Crime Lab in Augusta where an autopsy will be performed at a later time.
