Interact Club Looks to “Stuff the Bus” This Month

Stephens County High School’s Interact Club is working this month to collect food and help those less fortunate this Thanksgiving.

First, the third annual “Stuff the Bus” 5k and 10k run/walk is coming up on Saturday, November 21.

Interact Club Advisor Derek Demmler said the run will be at a new location this year.

“We are moving the course downtown,” said Demmler. “The last couple of years we have had it at the high school and that is a challenging course. This year, we are moving it downtown to utilize the downtown loop.”

The run/walk will start and end at the Rotary Park, which is right next to the Toccoa Clinic Foothills Center.

Demmler said all money raised during the race will go to benefit programs that help provide food to people who need it, both locally and internationally through Rotary.

For more information on the run/walk or to sign up, go to active.com and search “Stuff the Bus Toccoa” or call the Very Rev. Mary Demmler at 706-716-9347.

In conjunction with the run, Interact is also hosting its fourth annual “Stuff the Bus” food drive.

Demmler said the goal is to again stuff as much as food as possible on a school bus.

The club will collect canned goods and other non-perishable food items at Stephens County High School during the week of November 16 through November 20 or food can also be dropped off at the run/walk on November 21.

Collection bins for non-perishable foods will also be available at the Toccoa-Stephens County Chamber of Commerce Office, WNEG, Toccoa City Hall, Campfire Camp Toccoa, and Northeast Georgia Bank.

Demmler said all of that food will stay right here in Stephens County.

“Those donations are split up among the local food pantries that we know of in Toccoa and Stephens County,” said Demmler.

In its first three years, the Interact Club has collected over 9,000 pounds of food through this drive.
