The Stephens County Indian football team gets back on the winning track in Region 8-AAAA play.

Following two straight close losses, the Indians bounced back Friday to beat Madison County 49-0 in Danielsville.

The Indians scored on every possession in the first half of the game, adding in a defensive touchdown for a good measure. The entire second half was played with a running clock, with neither team scoring in the final two quarters.

Chaz Thornton ran for 138 yards and three touchdowns on just six carries, while Josh Tate added two rushing touchdowns for the Indians.

Dionte Mayfield completed three of his four pass attempts on the night for 93 yards, including a 52-yard touchdown pass to Tomas Colbert.

Defensively, Aahlijah Drinkard returned an interception for a touchdown.

The Indians took over from the Madison County 15-yard line on their first possession after the Indian defense forced a fumble. Two plays later, Thornton took it in from 1 yard out for a 7-0 Indian lead.

After a Madison punt, Chaz Thornton went 38 yards on second-and-10 to give Stephens County a 14-0 lead four minutes into the game.

The Indians made it 21-0 on a 58-yard Thornton touchdown run five minutes later.

Tate scored his first touchdown from a yard out with 10 minutes to go in the first half to make it 28-0.

With just over seven minutes to go in the first half, Mayfield hit Colbert for a 52-yard touchdown pass to make it 35-0.

90 seconds later, Drinkard intercepted Madison quarterback TJ Skelton and returned it about 35 yards for a score to make it 42-0.

The final Indian score came with just over three minutes left in the half on Tate’s second one-yard touchdown run.

The Indians are now 5-2 on the season overall and 2-2 in Region 8-AAAA. Madison County drops to 0-7 overall and 0-4 in region play.
