Indians, Lady Indians Fall to Elbert in Hoops Action

Stephens County’s Indian and Lady Indian basketball teams will have a few days off after a tough night in the Inferno in Elbert County.

The Lady Indian and Indian basketball teams both lost non-region games on the road to Elbert County Saturday.

In the girls’ game, Stephens County led at the half, but Elbert County pulled away in the second half for a 51-39 win. The Lady Indians trailed 8-0 early, but came back to lead 24-22 at the half. But Elbert outscored Stephens 29-15 in the final two quarters to come from behind and win.

Elbert had three players in double figures that accounted for 44 of their 51 points. Cyiarra Hill led the Lady Blue Devils with 17 points, while Bri Moon had 16 points and Tiawanna Griffin had 11 points.

Charity Major led Stephens County with 10 points.

The Lady Indians are now 5-13 overall.

In the boys’ game, Elbert County used full-court pressure defense to turn the heat up on the Indians, coming away with a 82-59 win. Stephens County had it to six points in the second quarter and only trailed by nine at the half, but the Blue Devils started the third quarter with a big run to begin to pull away.

Marc Moon led Elbert County with 29 points, while Terrell Hughes added 18.

Cody Helgeland and Tay Walker each had 13 points to lead Stephens County.

The Indians are now 11-7 overall.

Stephens County is off until Friday, when the Indians and Lady Indians will host Walnut Grove in a Region 8-AAAA game. Tip-off for the girls’ game is 7 p.m. with the boys’ game to follow. Air time on AM 630 WNEG and wnegradio.com is 6:45 p.m.
